Berlin Churches of the 1989 Peaceful Revolution / Kirchen der Friedlichen Revolution - In A Berlin Minute (Week 126)

In days like these, when there are so many uprisings that are answered by violence, I thought it would be a good idea to focus on a positive aspect in German history: The Peaceful Revolution of 1989.

1989 Peaceful Revolution Churches - Kirchen der Friedlichen Revolution - In A Berlin Minute (126) from Luci Westphal on Vimeo.

In short, the Peaceful Revolution was the non-violent uprising of the people of East Germany during the 1980s (mainly the fall of 1989) to express their displeasure with their government, which severely oppressed their freedom. It led to the overthrow of the DDR (GDR) government.

The main events started with the Monday Prayers and demonstrations at the Nikolai Kirche in Leipzig (encouraged through Glasnost/Perestroika in the USSR, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and long-time organizing through the Church) and eventually led to people in Berlin climbing the wall on November 9, 1989.

Of course, there are a lot more details and aspects to consider. I highly recommend to read up on the events to be reminded that some things can be resolved in a peaceful manner.

---
Because I only have one minute to work with, I decided to skip explanatory text in the video - and instead of showing a lot of the historic locations of these events, exclusively focus on the Berlin churches involved. These churches are the locations where Atheists, Christians and people of all different spiritual beliefs came together to pray, hold vigils and organize.

The churches in order of appearance:

Gethsemanekirche (Prenzlauer Berg - Stargarder Straße)

Elisabethkirche (Mitte - Invalidenstrasse)

Zionskirche (Mitte - Zionskirchplatz)

Bekenntniskirche (Treptow - Plesser Strasse)

Samariterkirche (Friedrichshain - Samariterstraße)

If you want to explore the locations of the Peaceful Revolution, I recommend checking out this list and photo series from the official Berlin page.

The song is "Sheltering Sky" by Cassis and Boxerin.

A little inside information, the guy walking towards camera in the first church is my friend David from the andberlin blog, who just by chance was wearing a T-Shirt featuring the image of people climbing the Berlin wall. That had to make it into the video.

Tilly & The Wall - "Love Riot" (MusicMonday)

Tilly & The Wall
--
Tilly & The Wall are back (after four years)! Actually their new album Heavy Mood isn't coming out until October 2nd. But the first two singles are already available.

"Love Riot" is an instant favorite for dancing, running, yelling along...

Unfortunately they released it without a video - but instead here's a free download for you via Stereogum.

The second single "Defender" has a video, but because of the children's choir it's not quite my thing as much. But feel free to watch it HERE

Viktoriapark, Kreuzberg - In A Berlin Minute (Week 125)

Viktoriapark, Kreuzberg - In A Berlin Minute (Week 125) from Luci Westphal on Vimeo.

Viktoriapark is an urban park, which opened in the Kreuzberg neighborhood in 1894.

Its significant sights are the monument (designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel) on top of the hill commemorating the liberation war during the Napoleonic Wars in and the artificial waterfall cascading down the same hill.

The park is also popular for its high views of Berlin, sunset lawns and, of course, a beer garden.

My personal favorite is the statue "Der Seltene Fang" ("The Rare Haul") by Ernst Herter, which I'd consider the sexiest statue I've seen in Berlin so far. Although I'm curious if others can be suggested. The other two statues featured I'd like to call the zombie and the vampire (Friedrich Rückert, Heinrich von Kleist and/or Ludwig Uhland - jury is still out which one is which).

The beautiful music is called "Swinging Senses" by my friend Cassis & The Sympathies. Check out her music website: http://www.filmmusicvision.com

I'm dedicating this video to my friends Erni (aka HammerharterErni) and Digilinus, who have been through a lot lately and have been so gracious to me. Stay strong, Digi. Bleib stark, Erni.

Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra: "Want It Back" (NSFW) (MusicMonday)

The video for "Want It Back" by Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra is the most incredible video I've watched in a long time.

I've got a bit of a soft spot for writing on the body (ever since watching The Pillow Book) and another weakness for street art and writings on the wall. Also I like stop animation. Next I was thrilled when this week I finally received my special CD edition + art book of her album Theatre Is Evil, which I supported through Kickstarter. And last but not least I really like this song.

The most fitting Monday Music post.

The video was directed by Jim Batt and it is uncensored and NSFW (so if you don't like watching nudity, don't).

Berlin Street Art 2012 (East) - In A Berlin Minute (Week 124)

For this third annual Berlin Street Art video (the others: Week 18 in 2010 and Week 68 in 2011) I let Berlin blogger and street art photographer David Yates take me on a tour through Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte and Friedrichshain (all former East Berlin neighborhoods).

He didn't just know where to find them, but he also knew a lot of the artists. Check out his blog AndBerlin for more street art images and Berlin posts.

Berlin Street Art 2012 (East) - In A Berlin Minute (Week 124) from Luci Westphal on Vimeo.

Because I found too many great pieces, I made two decisions: 1 - there'll be another extended version on my LuciWest channel soon; and 2 - I'll make another 1-minute video about street art in the former West Berlin neighborhoods.

Some of the artists whose work is in this video: El Bocho, Alias, Alicé, Mr. Fahrenheit, tona, Robi The Dog , ALANIZ, Czarnobyl, Plotbot, Roy Schreuder and... who can name the others?

For F and for M. Your light will continue to shine brightly.

To everyone else: don't take this to literally. They got everything right as far as I'm concerned.

Ruegen (Baltic Sea Island) - In A Berlin Minute (Week 123)

Ruegen, Ostsee (Island in the Baltic Sea) - In A Berlin Minute (Week 123) [HD] from Luci Westphal on Vimeo.

Rügen (Ruegen) is Germany's largest island and is located just off the coast in the Baltic Sea, a few hours drive from Berlin.

Because my friend Ginger is currently visiting from Brooklyn and my friend Judith was about to start a new job, we decided to have one more proper holiday and take a road trip up to the coast. We ended up checking out a few towns and beaches on Ruegen.

We had fun driving through the sunny countryside, bouncing on a trampoline in Binz and eating Fischbroetchen with Butterfisch (best fish Ginger ever had) in Sellin. It was a great way to enjoy one of the last days of summer.

The song is "Swarm The Hill" by Jason Matherne of Goonygoogoo Productions.

Check out episodes 16 (Mothers) and 17 (Children) from my documentary All's Well and Fair, which I released for free in episodes online so that you can enjoy it for free in small bites and maybe get involved in the conversation.

You really don't need to watch the entire documentary to understand, appreciate or engage with an episode. So feel free to watch whichever episode sounds intriguing to you.

List of all episodes HERE.

But if you'd like to watch the whole film in one setting without interruption, I recommend to click HERE, make sure you have auto-play turned on at the bottom of the screen, lean back and enjoy.

Sleigh Bells - "End Of The Line" (MusicMonday)

Sleigh Bells

"End of The Line" is a little less aggressive song from Brooklyn band Sleigh Bells off their album Reign of Terror. I think I like the mellower break.

Also enjoyed the video so much that I'm now going to cruise around on my bike for a bit. That's the end of the line.
So good bye.
